Comparison: Cisco ISR vs ASR

   |   1 comments in Cisco 1900 Series, Cisco 800 Series, Cisco ASR 1000 Series, Cisco ASR 900 Series September 7, 2017

Today I’m going to compare about Cisco ISR and ASR.

cisco isr vs asr

What is ISR?

ISR–Integrated Service Routers, generally used as internet edge for customerswith small/medium networks.

But what’s Integrated Service? Wikipedia’s explanation is to say integrated services is an architecture that specifies the elements to guarantee quality of service (QoS) on networks. IntServ can for example be used to allow video and sound to reach the receiver without interruption.

What is ASR?

ASR–Aggregation Services Routers, generally used as internet edge for enterprise networks and service providers.

Currently Cisco ISR Routers include 800 Series ISR, 1900 Series ISR, 2900 Series ISR, 3900 Series ISR and 4400 Series ISR. And the Cisco ASR Routers consist of 900 Series ASR, 1000 Series ASR, 5000  Series ASR and 9000 Series ASR.

The Cisco 800, 1900, 2900, 3900 series Integrated Service Routers (ISR) and Cisco 1000 series Aggregation Service Routers (ASR) can be used to protect the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data through an Internet Key Exchange (IKE) mutually-authenticated IPsec encrypted overlay network.

The ISR/ASR range has been approved to secure sensitive data when configured with the PSN Interim IPsec Profile.

An ISR includes the smarts and connections to support telephony (Voice over IP) and a number of other specialist components such as Intrusion Prevention later. Cisco coined the phrase to differentiate their products from other router vendors (who now also include many of those features).
